We are now in a position to name the two men who died in a road traffic collision on the A500 in the early hours of Saturday morning.
They were Marcus Smith, aged 22, from Yarnfield near Stone; and Sean Longstaff, aged 22, from Stoke-on-Trent.
The two were passengers in a green Vauxhall Vectra which was in collision with a white articulated goods vehicle on the southbound carriageway of the A500 at Cliffe Vale at around 4.45am on Saturday 22 August. Sadly they were pronounced dead at the scene.
The 23-year-old male driver of the Vectra was arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving. He has been bailed, pending further inquiries, to a date in September.
The driver of the HGV was uninjured.
Following the collision the road was closed for approximately seven hours whilst specialist officers from the regional Collision Investigation Unit examined the scene.
The families of both Marcus and Sean are continuing to receive support from specially trained officers.
A detailed investigation into the circumstances of the collision is now underway. Anyone who witnessed the collision; the manner of driving beforehand or knows of the movements of the vehicle’s occupants prior to the collision is asked to contact PC Brian Lovatt or PC Andy Hogan-Hughes at Staffordshire Police on 101, quoting incident 181 of August 22.
