Appeal for information following death in Hanley


Police are appealing for information after a man was found unconscious in Hanley in the early hours of this morning, Saturday.

At approximately 1am police were called to a disturbance at the Individual Bar, Trinity Street, Hanley. Upon arrival officers discovered an unconscious man. He was treated at the scene but sadly died at hospital a short time later.

The man’s family have been informed and are being supported by specially trained officers. He has been formally identified. He was 29 and from the Sutton Coldfield area. A post mortem examination will take place in due course. 

The death is being treated as unexplained and an investigation is underway by detectives. A number of arrests have been made in connection with the incident.

UPDATE:  Saturday Evening (Saturday 24 October)

A post mortem examination has taken place this afternoon but was inconclusive and further tests will be carried out in due course. The death will continue to be treated as unexplained.

The men, arrested for affray, have been released on bail pending further enquiries.

We are now in a position to confirm the name of the man who died after he was found collapsed at the Individual Bar in Hanley, Stoke-on-Trent, in the early hours of Saturday (24 October).

He has been formally identified as Matthew McSheffery, aged 29, from Sutton Coldfield.
