APPEAL: Did you witness any suspicious behaviour before a fire in Stafford?

We’re appealing for witnesses after a large fire at a disused pub was started deliberately.

Police initially responded to reports of anti-social behaviour near to The West Way, in West Way, Highfields, just after 4.20pm on Monday 7 December.

Officers attended and found no one at the premises but it was insecure. The company responsible for the premises were notified and asked to attend to secure it.

However, when the company attended at around 6.45pm police were called back to the pub due to further anti-social behaviour in the area.

Upon arrival officers found smoke coming from within the pub. Colleagues from the fire service were notified immediately and spent the night working to extinguish the blaze.

The road was closed as a safety precaution until the early hours of Tuesday 8 December and residents in the area were asked to keep their windows shut.

Police forensic investigators have worked with colleagues from Staffordshire Fire and Rescue Service to methodically examine the remains of the building and this investigative work at the scene has now concluded.

This examination has established that the fire was caused deliberately.

An investigation is ongoing and we want to hear from anyone who witnessed anything suspicious in the area prior to the fire.
